FLAGSTONE & PAVER PATIO
Believe it or not, a lot of people try and put in a flagstone or paver patio by just covering their grass with a little sand and then maybe some weed control fabric with the flagstone set on the top. Needless to say after a few months they have an extremely un-level patio. The proper procedure would actually be to excavate out some of the existing soil and import at least 4"-6" of 3/8" Crusher fines, and compact with a vibra-plate. This is then topped with a thin layer of fine sand in order to level out the flagstone. Decomposed Granite can be used between the flagstone. This will give you the long lasting patio. Using the crusher fines will also allow the patio to support weight up to 500 lbs at a compacted 6" if you handle your subgrade properly. For a more complicated, but nice finish, you can use concrete under the and in between the flagstone. You might need to hire a mason for this. Regardless of what you choose, we have all of the materials that you need and can answer any questions you might have. And don't forget to slope the patio away from your house at 2%
If you're going to take the time to put in a retaining wall over a 1 1/2' tall, take the time to do it properly. The dirt should be angled back away from the base of the wall and then lined with weed control fabric. The retaining wall then needs to be backfilled with a clean 1" or 1 1/2" rock so that water can flow down through the soil and out of the wall. Depending on the height of the wall, it is also a good idea to install a drain pipe. This stone is filled 1' from the top of the retaining wall and topped with weed control fabric. It is then covered with screened topsoil and allows for plants and grass to be planted. Inserting this stone (a crucial step that is often skipped) keeps your wall intact, while failure to do this will result in the weight of the soil pushing against your new retaining wall. And - just some additional food for thought... start off your project by trenching a footing for your retaining wall and backfilling with either concrete and rebar (recommended) or at the least, compacted flex base.
ABOVE GROUND POOLS
So you finally got that new pool for the family and the instructions say something about 1 or 2 or 3 yards of sand under the liner... well not every sand is created equally! We can't tell you how many calls we get asking for cushion sand (a cheap sand that contains small and sometimes large stones). We sell a very fine screened sand that is PERFECT for your new above ground pool!
